An abbey town on the edge of the Fens

Ramsey is a market town in the Huntingdonshire district, north of Huntingdon, with about 8,500 residents in 2011. It grew up around Ramsey Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in the 10th century. The abbey was dissolved in 1537.

Its broad main street, Great Whyte, began as a medieval waterway. It was covered over with a brick tunnel by 1854. The parish church of St Thomas à Becket dates from the late 12th century and is Grade I listed.

Older town houses

A town with this long a history has homes from many periods. In older properties, we expect solid floors without a damp-proof membrane. We test moisture before laying LVT or wood, and we suggest a safer finish if a floor is damp.

Suspended timber floors in period houses can creak and let in draughts. Carpet with a thick underlay quietens them and keeps rooms warmer. Hardboard over uneven boards gives a hard floor a flat base.

Newer homes and fenland ground

The town sits among the Fens, where ground conditions vary. Newer homes usually have concrete ground floors that suit LVT and laminate once level. Where we find dips, levelling costs £5–£15 per m², and the quote shows it.
