Fen island town, brick town

Whittlesey is a town in the Fens, east of Peterborough. It appears as Witlesig in a charter of 973, when it was an island in the marshy fen. With its nearby villages, it had 16,058 residents in 2011.

The listed Butter Cross, built in 1680, stands in the market square. The square sits within a conservation area with many buildings of interest. The Lower Oxford clay west of the town made it a major area for brick production from the early 19th century.
