A riverside market town and its homes

St Ives is a medieval market town in Huntingdonshire, on the River Great Ouse between Huntingdon and Ely. Its stone bridge was completed in 1426 and still carries a chapel. The settlement was first called Slepe, and its cattle market was once said to be second only to Smithfield.

The town is far larger now, with more than 16,000 people in the 2021 census. That growth means homes of every age, from old town-centre buildings to modern family estates.

Older houses in the historic centre

Older buildings often have solid ground floors without a damp-proof membrane, or uneven timber boards. We test for moisture and check level before fitting LVT or wood. Any preparation is priced in the quote, so you know the full cost before work starts.

Narrow and winding stairs are common in older houses. We measure every step at the visit, and stair carpet is priced per step. Wool carpet and engineered oak both suit period rooms.

Living near the Great Ouse

The river has a history of flooding, and new flood defences were built in 2006 and 2007. If your home is close to the water, think about the ground floor first. Moisture-tolerant floors such as LVT and sheet vinyl are easier to live with than solid wood in rooms at risk of damp.

Modern family homes

Newer houses usually have level, sealed floors, so most finishes go down with little preparation. A single run of LVT across a kitchen-diner is easy to clean and avoids threshold strips. Upstairs, swapping thin underlay for a better one makes bedrooms quieter and warmer.

Shops and offices

The town still holds street markets twice a week. For business owners, carpet tiles suit offices because single tiles can be replaced. Polyflor safety vinyl is a sound choice for café kitchens and washrooms.

Choosing the right floor for each room

Start with how a room is used, then pick the finish. Halls, stairs and landings take the most traffic, so a dense twist or loop carpet, or LVT, will last longest. Bedrooms can take a softer saxony or a wool-rich pile.

Kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms need a floor that copes with water. LVT and sheet vinyl both wipe clean and resist spills. For a lounge or dining room, engineered wood gives real timber without the movement of solid boards.

Underlay is worth getting right. A good underlay makes carpet feel thicker, last longer and keep a room warmer, and it costs £4 per m².

How a free home visit works

We are rated 5.0 from 75 Google reviews and have fitted 800+ floors over 10+ years. We hold £5m public liability and £10m employer's liability insurance.

Seeing samples at home matters. Riverside light and darker period rooms can change how a colour looks, so we leave nothing to guesswork.
