Why March PE15 Homes Need a Considered Approach to Flooring
Carpet fitters in March PE15 understand something that online flooring guides miss: the town's housing stock is genuinely diverse. Within a few streets of each other, you'll find a 1930s bay-fronted semi, a post-war concrete-floored bungalow, a 1980s new-build estate house, and a newer development on the outskirts. Each of these requires a different flooring approach — and getting it wrong is expensive.
At Cambridgeshire Carpets, we serve the March PE15 area as part of our Peterborough-based flooring service across Cambridgeshire and the Fens. This guide is written for March homeowners, landlords, and letting agents who want to make the right flooring decision the first time.
The Bungalow Problem: Why Flooring Matters More in March PE15 Than Most People Think
A significant proportion of March's housing stock is bungalows — built across several waves from the 1930s to the 1990s. Bungalows present a specific challenge for flooring: every room sits directly on the ground floor, which means thermal comfort, acoustic performance, and moisture management all depend entirely on the floor. There's no upper floor to provide insulation from below, no downstairs neighbours to absorb impact sound, and no escape from a cold concrete subfloor if the underlay isn't doing its job.
For bungalows in March PE15 — particularly those built before 1975 with solid concrete subfloors — our standard recommendation is:
- Rubber crumb underlay (not PU foam) in all carpeted rooms for moisture resistance and thermal performance
- LVT with a built-in damp-proof membrane for kitchens, hallways, and utility rooms
- A minimum 1.5 TOG underlay rating throughout, moving to 2.0+ in north-facing or poorly-insulated rooms
Period Homes in March Town Centre: Victorian and Edwardian Properties
March's town centre and streets like Creek Road, Broad Street, and High Street include Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis with original suspended timber floors. These properties have a different set of requirements:
- The timber floor breathes and moves seasonally — avoid rigid, glue-down installations unless the subfloor has been properly assessed and prepared
- Gaps between floorboards are common, and the subfloor preparation needs to address these before LVT or engineered wood is laid (typically with a 6mm hardboard overlay)
- Carpet remains the most forgiving flooring product for these subfloors — it tolerates minor movement without cracking or lifting
For period properties in March, our most common installation is a quality wool or wool-blend twist pile carpet — from Cormar, Westex, or Ulster Carpets — on a PU foam underlay in main living rooms and bedrooms, with either sheet vinyl or LVT in the kitchen and bathroom.
Post-War Estates: 1950s–1980s Housing in March
The largest category of housing in March is the post-war estate house — three-bedroom semis and bungalows built between 1950 and 1990, typically with solid concrete floors throughout. Streets like Burrowmoor Road, Estover Road, and the Norwood developments fall into this category.
For these properties, the concrete subfloor sets the agenda. It doesn't breathe, it can carry ground moisture, and it provides no give under foot. The flooring system (carpet + underlay, or LVT) has to compensate for all of this. Our approach:
- Living rooms and bedrooms: 40oz+ polypropylene twist carpet on rubber crumb underlay. Cormar Primo Choice or Westex Heathers are our most-fitted products in this price bracket for March homes.
- Hallways: Heavy-duty LVT or commercial-grade vinyl. Karndean Knight Tile in a stone-effect or Polyflor Camaro in a slate design are practical, durable choices that don't show dirt between visits.
- Kitchens: Sheet vinyl or glue-down LVT. Seamless installation preferred to eliminate moisture ingress at joints.
New Builds and Developments on the Edge of March
Newer properties on the outskirts of March — particularly on the southern edge toward Chatteris and the north side toward Upwell Road — are built to modern specifications with concrete screed and DPM installed. Developer-supplied carpet in these properties is typically mid-range budget quality, and upgrading on occupation or after the first year is common.
For new-build properties in March PE15, we recommend assessing what the developer has supplied before deciding whether to replace it immediately or wait until the property has settled. If the developer carpet is being replaced, the screed is a clean subfloor to work with: LVT, engineered wood, or a quality carpet can all be installed with minimal preparation. We regularly supply and fit flooring for new-build properties across March, Whittlesey, Chatteris, and Ely as homeowners prepare to make the property their own.

LVT for March Homes
For hard flooring, Karndean and Moduleo are our primary specifications. Vinyl Flooring for March PE15 Homes
