I've Got a Cheaper Flooring Quote — Should I Take It? An Honest Answer for Peterborough Homeowners

It is one of the most common questions we get after a home visit, and it is almost always asked apologetically: "I've had another quote and it's cheaper — should I just take it?" You are allowed to ask that. You are allowed to take the cheaper quote. What you are not always given is a straight answer about why it is cheaper, and that is the part that decides whether you have found a bargain or bought a problem. This guide is the honest, no-pressure version of that conversation, written for homeowners in Peterborough and across the PE postcodes.

The Short Answer

A cheaper quote is only cheaper if it covers the same work, in the same specification, to the same finish. Most of the time it does not — and the gap is not the fitter being greedy, it is items that have quietly been left out. Once you put the two quotes side by side on the six points below, one of two things happens: the difference shrinks to almost nothing, in which case take the cheaper one with our blessing; or it turns out you are comparing two different jobs, and the price gap explains itself.

For context, it is entirely normal for the same room in Peterborough to be quoted anywhere between £400 and £900 by three different providers. That spread is rarely about profit margin. It is about underlay, gripper, doors, disposal, stairs and who is actually holding the knife on the day.

Where Cheaper Quotes Usually Get Cheaper

1. The underlay. This is the single most common gap. A carpet quoted over an 8mm builder-grade underlay will always undercut the same carpet over a 10mm or 12mm PU or crumb underlay, and on paper you would never know the difference — the carpet name is identical. Underlay is what you actually feel underfoot and it is the biggest single factor in how long the carpet holds its appearance in a hallway or on a landing. 2. The gripper and the preparation. Reusing old gripper rods saves an hour and a few pounds and is the reason carpets creep away from skirtings in a year or two. Same with subfloor prep: filling, screwing down a squeaking board, levelling a dipped patch in a 1930s semi in Woodston or a Victorian terrace off the Eastfield side of PE1. It is invisible work that does not appear on a cheap quote because it was never priced.

3. The stairs. Stairs are the most skilled part of most domestic jobs and the easiest line to shave. A straight thirteen-step flight is a different job from a flight with winders, a half-landing and a bullnose bottom step — which is what you will find in a lot of Orton Goldhay and Stanground housing. Check whether the quote prices stairs properly or folds them into a vague "landing and stairs" figure. 4. Doors, thresholds and trims. Easing and rehanging doors, and supplying proper threshold bars between rooms, are small items that add up. If your new floor is thicker than the old one — very common when moving from worn carpet to a wool twist, or from vinyl to luxury vinyl tiles — something has to be trimmed. If nobody has priced it, somebody will be asking you for extra money on the day, or leaving you with doors that catch.

5. Moving furniture and taking the old floor away. Uplift and responsible disposal of the old carpet and underlay is a genuine cost. A quote that assumes you have emptied the room and will take four bags of old carpet to the tip yourself is cheaper — legitimately so, if that is what you want. Just make sure you know that is the deal before the van arrives.

6. Who is fitting. Some of the lowest quotes in Peterborough come from retailers who sell you the carpet and then subcontract the fitting to whoever is available that week. That is not automatically bad, but it means nobody owns the result. When something needs putting right, you are between two companies. How to Compare the Two Quotes in Ten Minutes

Put both quotes on the kitchen table and answer these questions for each one. You do not need us on the phone to do it.

• Does it name the carpet or floor by manufacturer and range — Cormar, Victoria, Westex, Abingdon, Ulster or Brockway for carpet, or a Karndean, Amtico or Quick-Step range for hard floors — or just "beige twist"?
• Does it name the underlay by brand and thickness?
• Is gripper listed as new?
• Are stairs priced per step or as a lump?
• Are doors, thresholds, uplift and disposal included or excluded?
• Is VAT shown, and is the measure guaranteed — meaning who pays if it is short?

If both quotes answer all six the same way and one is still cheaper, that is a real saving. Take it. We would rather you did that than felt cornered into paying us more for the same thing.

What Our Prices Actually Look Like

So you have something honest to measure against, here is the range we work in across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. Hard-wearing polypropylene twist starts from £14 per m² supplied and fitted with underlay and gripper included. Mid-range wool-mix twists and saxonies typically land between £25 and £40 per m² fitted, and premium wool or woven ranges run from £40 to £70+ per m². Stairs are priced from £25 per step. A typical three-bedroom semi carpeted throughout usually falls between £1,400 and £3,500 supplied and fitted, depending on range and stairs.

On hard floors, sheet vinyl starts from £15 per m², laminate from £18 per m², LVT from £35 per m² and engineered wood from £40 per m², all supplied and fitted. If a quote sits a long way under the bottom of those ranges, it is worth asking which of the six items above has been left out — not because the other firm is dishonest, but because something has to give.

When Cheaper Is Genuinely the Right Call

There are plenty of situations where the cheaper quote is simply the sensible one, and we will tell you so. A rental turnaround in PE1 where the carpet needs to survive two years and then be replaced. A room you already know you are reconfiguring within eighteen months. A spare bedroom in a Cardea or Hampton Vale new build that barely gets walked on. A bungalow in Eye or Whittlesey with no stairs, square rooms and a sound concrete subfloor, where the job genuinely is straightforward and there is very little for a fitter to get wrong. In those cases, paying for a premium specification is money that does not come back to you.

When Cheaper Is a Warning Sign

Be more careful when the gap is large and the quote is vague; when you are asked for a big cash deposit up front; when nobody has been into the property to measure and the price came off a phone call; when there is no written specification at all; or when the date offered is suspiciously soon for a busy season. A measure that has not happened is the one that costs people the most — carpet ordered short cannot be stretched, and the second roll rarely matches the first batch.
